With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Miljenko "Mike" Grgich, a name synonymous with innovation, excellence, and pioneering spirit in the world of winemaking. Mike's enduring legacy extends far beyond his remarkable wines; it encompasses his dedication to sustainability, his mentorship of future winemakers, and his unwavering commitment to his Croatian heritage.
Born Miljenko Grgić on April 1, 1923, in a small Croatian village, he embarked on an extraordinary journey that led him to the heart of Napa Valley. His career, spanning over six decades, was marked by groundbreaking achievements. Mike's Chardonnay triumphed in the 1976 Judgment of Paris, forever altering the perception of California wines and propelling Napa Valley onto the global stage.
His contributions transcended the wine business as Mike was a fervent advocate of education, generously offering scholarships and mentorship to aspiring winemakers. He championed sustainability and regenerative farming practices, setting a standard for environmental stewardship in the industry. His passion for peace led him to support and work closely with Roots of Peace, an organization dedicated to eradicating mine fields and returning land to productive agricultural use, even accompanying founder Heidi Kuhn to Croatia to walk the first field that Roots of Peace demined.
Mike's unwavering commitment to his Croatian roots was evident in his support of cultural events and his efforts to aid his homeland. He leaves behind a legacy of exceptional wines, a dedication to the earth, and a belief in the power of education and giving back. Of all the many achievements in his 100 extraordinary years of life, he has always said he was most proud of being able to provide employment for his people.
As we bid farewell to Miljenko "Mike" Grgich, we celebrate a life marked by extraordinary achievements, profound impact, and a legacy that will forever inspire the world of wine. He truly lived and epitomized the words his father gave him: “Every day, do your best, learn something new, and make a friend.”
